GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S MEDALS
(Grade 12)

Annually, the Governor-General of Canada awarded medals to the graduates of Saskatchewan high schools. In 1928, when I graduated, there was one medal for each of the large city collegiates and one medal for the best student of all the other high schools combined. By the time a Western student won this medal, there was a medal for each of the large city collegiates and one medal for each of the 16 districts into which the other high schools divided. This award system changed again in 1989 so that each high school and each collegiate in the province received a medal.

MAURICE TAYLOR CHRISTIAN MAN AWARD
(Grade 12)

Mr. Taylor first presented the Maurice Taylor Christian Man Award in 1984. The criteria as set up by Maurice include: the student must be a grade 12 student in good standing and must be a Christian who demonstrates a positive Christian influence and is deemed to have the respect of both staff and students. An additional $500 scholarship will be granted to the recipient if he successfully completes a full-year in the post-secondary Bible program at W.C.C. the following year.

Mr. Taylor became director for Hanes Hall in the fall of 1979. The Taylor home has always been open to everyone, but especially to the boys in the dormitory. When Mr. and Mrs. Taylor set up their Taylor Nooks business in 1983, they established both business and living quarters near the college so they could continue close contact with the students.

PRESIDENT'S MEDAL
(Grade 12)

This award was first presented in 1963 by President Wieb. "In 1962, I realized that certain students seemed to be above the average in the way they responded to the opportunity presented at the school. I subsequently introduced the President's Gold Medal award as a means of giving recognition to one of the graduating students in high school. To me, this award helps us to keep in perspective the goals and objectives of the school by identifying in one individual those characteristics which we would like to see developed in each of our students.

"I realize that the selection of one person to be honoured in this way necessitates leaving out other students who may be nearly as worthy but I also believe that the exercise involved in making the selection is beneficial in that the relative merits of many students are compared. This comparison shows us just how many 'good' students we are blessed with each year and indicates the influence Christ is having in their lives."

The criteria used for selection are: the student must be taking a reasonably full academic load with good, solid academic record; must be recognized as a leader in good works such as church, W.C.C., community, etc.; must display Christian character of unselfishness and concern for others; display promise for the future; exemplify the type of student we want in our school; and must be a people person.

Q. FAYE BRAZLE CHRISTIAN WOMANHOOD AWARD

BRAZLE FAMILY AWARD
(Grade 12)

The Brazles moved to Western from Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the fall of 1963. Mrs. Brazle opened her home to the students and is dearly remembered as a very hospitable Christian lady. Mrs. Brazle offered a teacher training class to the high school girls. Before her illness, she conducted these classes on Wednesday nights in the chapel. As soon as her affliction from multiple sclerosis subsided some what, Mrs. Brazle taught the classes bi-weekly on Sunday afternoons at her home. Mrs. Brazle passed away in January 1972. To honour their mother, the family set up the Q. Faye Brazle Christian Womanhood Award in 1975 in her memory.

The criteria used as set by the Brazle family are what they feel were their mother's characteristics, ideals she lived and tried to teach her children.

The winner must be a grade 12 graduating young woman who has a spirit of dedication, a sense of contentment (accepting of life), a concern for other people, a willingness to serve, a desire to teach and a sense of humour.
